RLP Student Orientation Day 2026

Our Student Orientation Day is a unique opportunity for new students to connect with other PhD, Masters and Honours students, present on their specific research and begin forging industry relationships. The agenda includes professional development opportunities with guest speakers including an industry representative from the water sector and a recent graduate sharing their journey with the Student Program. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about the Australian Water Association and the opportunities available through the Young Water Professionals network.

Dr David Bergmann

Chief Executive Officer
Water Research Australia

 

David is the CEO of Water Research Australia, bringing nearly 25 years of experience in R&D across the chemicals, food, and water and wastewater sectors, from global multinationals to regional utilities. He holds a PhD in Chemistry from Monash University and is an AICD-qualified Company Director. David is an experienced manager and people leader of large R&D teams, spanning diverse industries, cultures, and organisations. He joined the water industry in 2015 at Victorian utility South East Water, where he significantly expanded their research portfolio and partnerships. His notable contributions included the innovative Aquarevo water- and energy-saving estate, the development of pyrolysis technology to produce Biochar from biosolids with RMIT, and various IoT devices for real-time monitoring. A holder of multiple patents and a collaborator in scientific publications on contaminants, alternative water, pyrolysis technology and biochar applications, David also has extensive leadership experience in the not-for-profit sector, including four years on the Board of WaterRA. As a strategic and practical thinker, David excels in developing collaborative partnerships, leading high-performing teams, and translating research into real-world solutions.

Samira Rashetnia 

Senior Drainage Engineer
Darebin City Council

 

Samira is a Senior Drainage Engineer at Darebin City Council and a recent PhD graduate, combining advanced academic research with over 20 years of experience in the water industry. Her expertise spans the delivery of complex flood, stormwater, and water infrastructure projects across both public and private sectors in Australia and internationally. Her work is underpinned by strong technical capability and proven project management skills. She is passionate about developing innovative, sustainable solutions to protect and manage Australia’s water resources. She is recognised for integrating research with practical engineering expertise, supported by strong collaboration and communication skills.
