Overview

Activated sludge treatment processes (ASP) are the principal workhorse of most wastewater treatment plants globally. ASPs are designed primarily for reducing organic matter, nutrients, solids and odour, which contrasts with most tertiary filtration and disinfection processes that are specifically intended to reduce the concentration of infectious pathogens. This research project will aim to develop guidance on how ASPs incidentally reduce pathogen concentrations, the challenges and knowledge gaps with validation and develop an interim ASP Validation Protocol.
